Youth Service Projects
Serving Bartlesville Youth
We have multiple projects related to youth in the area. They include dictionaries, a speech contest, scholarships, and so forth. Check us out!
Dictionary Project
Daybreak Rotary Foundation, in conjunction with the Noon Club, has distributed dictionaries in the local area since adopting this project in the 2004-2005 Rotary year (thanks to Jim Scinta, and then Kumar Krishnan for pushing this effort). Our deliveries in 2020 and 2021 were hampered a bit by COVID-19, but we still did the project!
It is our goal to encourage children to use dictionaries so that they will be able to use the English language effectively. By providing this tool we assist teachers in making all students active readers, good writers and creative thinkers. Most years we have a personalized name plate in each dictionary courtesy of our Bartlesville High School Interact Club.

4-Way Speech
The 4-way speech contest offers an opportunity for educators to provide an ethical learning opportunity to high school students. Students in participating classes are asked to write a short essay on the subject: "What the Rotary Four Way Test Means to Me" that can be read in six minutes to their entire class. The students are not limited in their choice of topics. They are encouraged for innovation and creativity in their selection, even if it seems off-the-wall, or states a position that might be controversial or held only by a minority. The only criteria should be that the student's presentation must specifically relate the essay/speech to Rotary's Four Way Test. It can be humorous or serious, current or historical, commonplace or unique. The text only need incorporate in some manner each of the four tenets of the "Four Way Test of the Things We Think, Say or Do", which states the following:
- Is it the TRUTH?
- Is it FAIR to all concerned?
- Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
- Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Our club will select and sponsor student(s) to participate and compete with other students sponsored by Rotary Clubs in our District. Bartlesville (Noon) Rotary has matched our $300 prize money to be awarded to othe winner of the "speech off". Winning students will present their speech at our Club Meeting. The top three finishers selected by Rotarians in our club will receive cash prizes and continue into the Rotary District 6110 competition representing our Club. The winner at the Rotary 6110 District Assembly in May will receive $1000. Each of the runner-ups will receive $350.
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) is an intensive training program for youth. Talented young people attend a seminar, camp, or workshop, generally three to ten days in length, organized by Rotarians at the local club or district level. The RYLA program enables young people to debate issues of professional responsibility and human relations, improve leadership and communication skills, learn about businesses and institutions, and meet Rotarians while having fun and making friends.
Students attending the RYLA camp will be provided with all meals, snacks, lodging, seminar activities and materials, a ROPES course, entertainment, a dance and other activities/items. There is NO charge involved for Rotarians, spouses, or cabin chaperones. The counselors, who will work directly with the students, will come from the various universities within District 6110.
Scholarships
Bartlesville Daybreak Rotary Scholarship Committee awards at least one $5,000.00 University scholarships annually to area high school seniors enrolling in college. Starting in the spring of 2021, under the direction of our President, Loren Roszel, we are also adding at least one $1,000.00 vocational scholarship. The application will be the same with a place to select which type of scholarship being applied for.
